Adult English Language Instruction

Adult English Language and Literacy classes (formerly ESL) are offered to non-native English speakers through Kirkwood's Adult Education and Literacy program. Students in these classes learn and practice the language and culture skills necessary for self-sufficiency, further academic study, and gainful employment. Through these classes, students are can access pathways to opportunities in job training programs, high school equivalency classes, or higher education. Classes are taught in Cedar Rapids, Coralville, and online at levels designed to meet the needs of all learners.

English Language and Literacy students may be eligible to participate in job training and additional English language instructional programs through Kirkwood’s Integrated Education and Training (IET)/Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) programming. These programs include classes and support towards credentials, and/or on the job training customized to meet the needs of local employers looking to expand their workforce.
