Provides an introduction to the profession of surgical technology. Explores the history and professional associations while emphasizing the roles and responsibilities of the surgical technologist and surgical team members. Introduces the biopsychosocial needs of the surgical patient and respecting diverse populations. Ethical, moral and legal issues are explored. Provides information about employability skills, regulatory agencies, healthcare facilities, as well as departmental organization and management within the facilities. SUR-230 Fundamentals of Surgical Technology (4)
Provides an in-depth exploration of the perioperative duties of the surgical technologist including principles of setting up and maintaining a sterile field. Principles of patient identification, transportation, positioning, skin preparation, draping techniques, time-outs, disinfection of the OR, and second circulator duties are examined. SUR-232 Fundamentals of Surgical Technology Lab (3)
Provides the opportunity to apply concepts and demonstrate skills related to the principles and techniques regarding preoperative case management for the surgical technologist in the scrub, second scrub and second circulating roles. Emphasizes basic concepts of aseptic technique, scrubbing, gowning, gloving, transporting, transferring, positioning, skin preparation and draping. Focuses on creating and maintaining a sterile field in order to provide optimal patient care in the surgical setting. Arts & Sciences Elective Code: B

SUR-235 Sciences of Surgical Technology (3)
Focuses on the principles of asepsis, microbiology, disinfection and sterile processing. Principles of hemostasis, wound healing and sutures are explored. Biomedical sciences, anesthesia, pharmacology and all-hazards preparation are introduced. Arts & Sciences Elective Code: B

SUR-335 Surgical Specialties Lab (3)
Provides the opportunity to practice preoperative and intraoperative surgical case management in general, OB/GYN, minimally invasive/laparoscopic, genitourinary and plastic, oral, maxillofacial, ophthalmic, ENT, neurosurgery, cardiovascular, and orthopedic surgical procedures. Focuses on maintaining sterile technique and setting up instrumentation and supplies for surgical procedures. Arts & Sciences Elective Code: B

Emphasizes the role of the surgical technologist in ophthalmic, oral and maxillofacial, plastic and reconstructive, and ENT surgical procedures with emphasis on anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, diagnostic interventions, instrumentation, equipment, procedural steps and patient safety. SUR-344 Surgical Specialties III (6)
Builds on the basic knowledge of surgical specialties. Emphasizes the role of the surgical technologist in orthopedic, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic, peripheral vascular and robotic surgical procedures with emphasis on anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, diagnostic interventions, instrumentation, equipment, procedural steps and patient safety. SUR-500 Surgical Technology Clinic I (3)
Provides exposure to community-based practice in order to develop competence as an entry-level surgical technologist. Includes being assigned to a surgical site to practice all skills related to the surgical technologist within the perioperative setting under the supervision of a facility-designated preceptor. Emphasis will be placed on the surgical technologist in the scrub role. Arts & Sciences Elective Code: B

SUR-501 Surgical Technology Clinic II (7)
Builds on prior clinic experience and continues the practice of the surgical scrub role under the supervision of a facility-designated preceptor. Includes demonstrating progression towards autonomous performance of surgical technology functions, as well as increased competency in more complex surgical cases. Requires the submitting of documentation to fulfill accreditation standards, including records of participation in a specified number of cases across various specialties, in addition to sitting for the national certification examination. Arts & Sciences Elective Code: B; Comments: Students must participate in the national certification exam as part of the course completion requirement.
